Rights & Responsibilities: A Handbook for Students and Parents

Dear Newport News Families:

The goal of Newport News Public Schools is to provide a quality education that prepares every student for college, career and citizenship. To reach this goal, Newport News Public Schools and our students, family members, and supporters have taken on the critical task of creating Smart, Safe Schools for our community.

NNPS has made smart strides in raising student achievement levels, increasing enrollment in rigorous coursework, moving students into higher-level math, expanding pre-school access, and narrowing achievement gaps.

At the same time, the school division has worked to create safe environments for students by defining clear expectations for behavior, supporting programs that build positive, nurturing relationships, and investing in security staff and electronic surveillance.

The Rights & Responsibilities handbook contains useful information for families and students of Newport News Public Schools, including required notices, permission forms, and the student code of conduct. Please keep this handbook throughout the school year. Families are encouraged to review the contents of this handbook and share the appropriate information with your child(ren).
