Dr. Ashby KilgoreAshby C. Kilgore, Ed.D., Superintendent

As Superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, Dr. Ashby C. Kilgore promotes Smart, Safe Schools by building a foundation of high expectations, rigorous content, and persistent support for students and teachers, using increased time for instruction, technology tools, and literacy and mathematics coaches. Recognized as an innovative leader, she focuses the school division’s work on equipping students with the knowledge and opportunities necessary for the 21st century to ensure that all students graduate college, career and citizen-ready.  Looking back: 2011

This year, my thoughts turn to the many successes we’ve experienced thus far - successes and accomplishments that would not have been possible without the collective efforts of our expert employee team.

  • NSBA Education Technology Site Visit
    In April, NNPS hosted the National School Boards Association's Technology Leadership Network.
  • Transforming Science
    Members of local scientific, engineering, and health-care communities explored newly renovated NNPS science labs at the Science Expo & Open House at Crittenden Middle School.
  • Dropout Rate Decrease
    Newport News high schools increased their on-time graduation rate and decreased the dropout rate in 2011.
  • Go Green, Get Healthy
    NNPS was certified as a Green Schools Division in 2011. In addition to keeping our environment healthy, we strive to promote wellness and health for our students and staff.
  • Community Partnerships
    Our Career Pathways initiative involved local businesses and organizations in Spring Break: Make It Work.

 Looking ahead: 2012

NNPS will focus on our mission of ensuring that all students graduate college, career and citizen-ready. Our smart, safe schools will prepare students for their roles as a learner, a future employee and a contributing citizen in the 21st century.

  • STEM Education
    NNPS will emphasize and integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics into our quality curriculum.
  • 21st Century Learning
    Our quality curriculum, as well as initiatives such as Early College Scholars and Career Pathways, will teach students how to live and work in a global economy.
  • Youth Development
    We are dedicated to helping young people make positive changes no matter what circumstances they face.
  • Budget and Financial Resiliency
    We will evolve our planning process to keep up with best practices and to anticipate the changing needs of our district.
  • Expert Employees
    Dynamic school divisions employ and develop highly qualified people who are crucial to growth and student achievement.
