Huntington Middle School: The Next Chapter

The proud history of Huntington High School and Huntington Middle School will continue with the construction of a new 600-student middle school, anticipated to open during the 2026-2027 school year.

The new middle school is part of the city’s Southeast Community Resource Area that is set to include a public library and community center, as well as sports and recreation features.

Construction Progress Update

November 19, 2025

The Huntington Middle School building site is divided into four (4) building zones, A, B, C, and D. MEB General Contractors, Inc, the Contractor, is developing the building pad in the order of zones C, D, B, and A. The work completed in these building zones are as follows:

Building Zones

Zone “C”

  • Roofing is complete for the gym.
  • Roofing on remainder of area C low roof(s), i.e., entry way, staff dining, locker rooms, main corridor are approximately 75% complete.
  • Continue overhead mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins over gym and locker room areas.
  • Installation of overhead sprinkler piping is approximately 50% complete.
  • Metal stud framing for gym exterior parapets and overhang is complete.
  • Interior “non” load bearing CMU block walls in locker rooms are complete.
  • Air barrier is approximately 50% complete

Zone “D”

  • Structural steel joists and decks in the kitchen/cafeteria are complete.
  • Installation of steel joists and roof deck over 3rd floor classroom areas is complete.
  • Roof over kitchen cafeteria area 50% complete.
  • Continue installation of overhead mechanical, electrical, & plumbing rough-ins in the kitchen area.
  • Installation of interior CMU walls in the cafeteria, kitchen, and main mechanical room are complete.
  • Main electrical and mechanical equipment is in place in the mechanical and electrical rooms.
  • Slab on decks have been placed on 2nd and 3rd floor.
  • Brick veneer in progress around loading dock and anticipated to begin on the classroom side of area D.
  • Loading dock foundations are complete.
  • Conduits are being installed in the transformer pad
  • The Dominion Energy transformer pad is anticipated to be placed by mid-November.
  • Installation of interior CMU non-load bearing partition walls are in progress on 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors.

Zone “B”

  • Structural steel erection in the classroom wing is complete.
  • Structural steel erection in the library/media area is anticipated to be completed by mid-November.
  • Structural steel erection over the administration area anticipated to be completed by end-of-November.
  • Installation of slab-on-deck placements are in progress for the 2nd floor and are anticipated to start mid-November for the 3rd floor.
  • All load bearing CMU block walls are complete.
  • Exterior wall framing and sheathing are in progress.
  • Brick veneer is anticipated to start mid-November.

Zone “A”

  • Interior CMU non-load bearing partition walls are complete.

Field House

  • Complete installation of interior CMU block walls.
  • In wall plumbing and electrical rough-ins are complete.

Utilities

  • Storm water installations are complete across and down 30th Street. On-site storm water piping is approximately 30% complete.
  • Water: Newport News Waterworks currently reviewing design drawings for compliance with their criteria and coordinating with MEB Contractors. Water lines have been installed from the building to the detector check and FDC and are pending the waterworks design prior to continuation.
  • Electrical: Dominion Energy transformer is in Richmond, VA and the site is being prepped for delivery by mid-November.
  • Gas: Gas meter locations have been provided for the owner and confirmed by the design team. The City of Newport News has submitted a work order and application to Virginia Natural Gas. VNG has confirmed the meter location and is scheduling a contractor for the gas line install across Wickham to the meter location (installation TBD).
  • Communications: The contractor said the school will be ready for the communications subcontractor to perform their work.

Overall Completion

  • Overall Completion is 42% complete.
