GearUP: Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness
for Undergraduate Programs
GearUP is a multi-year federal education grant with two primary
purposes:
-
To give more students (especially low-income students) the
skills, encouragement, and preparation needed to pursue postsecondary
education; and
-
To contribute to the reform and improvement of schools.
What is the need?
America cannot afford to waste the talents of any of its young
people. Half of low-income students with average test scores and
one-third of middle income students with average test scores do
not go to college. Even high achieving
students from low-income families are significantly less likely
to attend than high-achieving students from higher incomes families.
Yet in the twenty-first century, two to four years of college will
be more essential than ever before. GearUP is designed to enable
more young Americans to stay in school, study hard, and take the
right courses to go to college.
