Grants: VOICES OF A NATION

Newport News Public Schools has previously received three grant awards through the U.S. Department of Education Teaching American History (TAH) program. These awards have funded the programs know within NNPS as Foundations of Freedom (FoF).  Each award covered a three year period and focused on enhancing history instruction at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

The most current grant received from the Department of Education Teaching American History (TAH) program is also a three year grant with the option for a fourth and fifth years.  The current grant is known as Voices of a Nation and the unique objective of this grant project is the vertical articulation of teachers working in Professional Learning Teams (PLT’s).

Project Goals

Voices of a Nation will build on the previous success of FoF at the various school levels and continue to enhance teachers’ traditional American history content knowledge.  The program seeks to ensure the delivery of high quality U.S. history education through increased professional development opportunities that will equip teachers with effective instructional strategies for teaching American history.    

Project Activities

Participating teachers will attend various workshops and colloquia presented by American history professionals at both the national and local levelsThey will also have opportunities to work with history professionals, to learn onsite at museums and historical locations, and to take college classes to enhance their content knowledge.

 Voices of a Nation will cover three major eras of time:
 
Creating a Nation: 1600-1800 (NAEP historical periods 1, 2, & 3)
Testing a Nation: 1800-1898 (NAEP historical periods 3, 4, 5, & 6) and
Influencing a World: 1898-2000 (NAEP historical periods 6, 7, & 8)

Professional Development Activities will include:

  • Graduate level courses in U.S. history
  • National Council for History Education (NCHE) two-day colloquia
  • Distinguished Lecturer Series by the Organization of American Historians (OAH)
  • Virginia Historical Society two day workshops
  • The Smithsonian American History Museum workshops
  • The Hampton History Museum seminars
  • Museum Outreach Programs
