Smart, Safe Schools: Preparing students for 21st Century Success

Dear Newport News Families:

Welcome to Newport News Public Schools! I am honored to serve the Newport News community as superintendent of the school division.

Newport News Public Schools has much to be proud of as the 2008-2009 school year begins. Thirty-nine of our forty schools are Fully Accredited, and seventeen of our elementary schools were recognized by the State of Virginia for going above and beyond the standards. Our Standards of Learning test scores in English and Math increased in Elementary, Middle, and High School, and the number of students graduating with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher increased by 3%.

This new school year promises continued success as we prepare Newport News Public School students for a world that is increasingly technological and globally connected. Newport News Public School employees work hard to ensure that all of our schools are Smart, Safe Schools. Smart, Safe Schools provide strong foundations in math, literacy, history, and science, as well as safe, nurturing school environments that give students the knowledge and skills they will need for the 21st century.

By 2015, more than half of the world will be working in jobs that don’t yet exist. Students must be prepared for jobs involving technology skills, complex communication and expert thinking. In Newport News Public Schools, Career Pathways help students develop Career Readiness skills while enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the wide array of available careers.

As we move forward with the important work ahead of us, we will continue to keep you informed of developments in the school division.
