| STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Student Assistance Program (SAP) consists of a supervisor,
five high school Student Assistance Counselors, one middle school
Student Assistance Counselor, and an administrative secretary.
The supervisor is responsible for providing direction to the SAP and Student Assistance Counselors. Also, the supervisor directs the school division’s citizenship education program, crisis response team, and division-wide Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act initiatives.
The six student assistance counselors are resources to school personnel
at the building level to all issues interfering with a student's
education. This may include, but is not limited to the following:
- Suicidal ideation
- Suspicion of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use
- Students returning from Juvenile Justice Department
- Students returning from Juvenile Detention
- Students returning from a psychiatric setting
- Disruptive students
- Divorce/loss
- Failing grades
- Poor attendance
- Bullying behavior
- Pregnancy
- Abuse and neglect
The Newport News Public School's Crisis response Team responds
to crisis situations throughout the school division. The goal of
the team is to restore normalcy to the building after a crisis situation
or a critical incident. The crisis response team consists of professionals
from the following disciplines:
- Student Assistance Counselors
- School social workers
- School psychologists
- School guidance counselors
- Supervisor of guidance and counseling
- Lead school social worker
- Lead school psychologist
