| ALTERNATIVE & SUPPORT SERVICES
The Office of Alternative and Support Services provides
a variety of opportunities and experiences for a diverse group of
learners beyond the traditional classroom setting. Additionally,
this office restores identified students and adults to a level of
academic achievement and behavioral responsibility that supports
their educational and personal needs.
Alternative and Support Services is comprised of Alternative Programs,
Continuing Education, Health Services and Homebound Instruction.
Alternative programs provide students who have been expelled or
long-term suspended an opportunity to continue their education in
a small educational setting. It provides an educational opportunity
to high school students in grades 10-12 with exceptional ability
to excel in a nontraditional environment. These programs equip 16-
and 17-year-old students leaving school to acquire a GED.
Short Term Suspension Programs: Short-term suspension programs
are educational programs designed to assist students with tutorial
services during student’s suspension period from school. These
programs are for any student who has been suspended from school
for 10 days or less. More
on short-term suspension programs.
Continuing Education services are offered to citizens in the community
at a wide array of locations to include Riverside Health and the
Northrop Grumman Newport News. Further, instructional opportunities
are provided to students in the K-12 setting by allowing them to
complete high school repeat courses or their graduation requirements
in an Independent Study program.
Health Services monitors and treats, with proper orders, diagnosed
medical problems in addition to dispensing medication appropriately.
The health care professionals in the area assess illness and injuries
and advise parents/guardians and make appropriate recommendations
and referrals. They screen, identify for vision, hearing, growth
and dental defects. In addition, TB certification, bloodborne pathogens
plan, and the flu shot program for school employees are managed.
Alternative and Support Services monitors homebound instruction.
This service is provided to students that are unable to attend the
regular school setting for doctor-referred medical reasons. On occasion,
this service is provided to students for administrative reasons.
