RESOURCES AND SUPPORT
CENTRAL ADMINISTRATIVE
STAFF
The Special Education Programs administrative team strives to
support the development, implementation, and evaluation of appropriate
services for students with disabilities in Newport News Public
Schools. Through a tiered system of supervision, program specialists
are able to focus on individual needs of students and support
classroom teachers, while keeping the demands of a large school
division in perspective.
Strong leadership enables schools to meet both high expectations
and differentiate instruction for the student with disabilities.
The administrative staff, housed at the Newport News School Board
Offices, works to support, enable, and facilitate both building-level
staff and student needs in the school division.

SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVISORY
COMMITTEE
The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) for the Newport
News Public Schools has a long and illustrious history of support
for special education. Over 20 years ago, the Committee was formed
to advise program development, implementation, and evaluation
of students with disabilities. Since its inception, the Committee
has assisted the staff and parents of students with disabilities
in the planning of appropriate services, as well as acting as
liaison between parents, community members, and division staff.
The Committee is made up of parents, community members, and supporting
agency personnel - all relevant participants in the lives of students
with disabilities. The Committee's officers and members meet on
the fourth Tuesday of each month (except for the months of December,
June, July, and August) in the School Board Offices of Newport
News Public Schools to discuss issues of concern raised by parents,
committee members, and others. The meetings are open to the public.
Interested parties are encouraged to attend committee meetings,
where they may address their concerns for students with disabilities.
