The Newport News Juvenile Detention School provides instruction for middle and high school students from the ages of 12 through 17 years old. These are students who have been incarcerated in a secure residential setting as per a juvenile court judge.

The local school district, through a contract with the Virginia Department of Education, provides a school program that offers, by law, 5.5 hours of instruction per day. The school is staffed with certified/licensed teachers and administrators and offers subjects in language arts, mathematics, social studies, reading, science and health and physical education.

The school also offers a special education curriculum for those students who have an IEP as identified by the school district.
