Five Newport News high schools make the grade on Newsweek’s list

(June 9, 2009) --  For the fifth consecutive year, five Newport News high schools are on Newsweek magazine’s list of 1,500 top public high schools in the United States. The rankings are based on the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Cambridge tests taken, divided by the number of graduating seniors for 2008.

Warwick High, home of the International Baccalaureate Program, was the highest ranked city school at No. 304 on the list, followed by Menchville at No. 638, Woodside at No. 907, Heritage at No. 1237, and Denbigh at No. 1478.

According to Newsweek, the magazine’s list represents the top 6 percent of public schools.
