NNPS Awarded 21st Century Community Learning Center Grants
(September 19, 2008) -- Newport News Public Schools has been awarded two grants to fund additional 21st Century Community Learning Centers. Awards were received for centers to be established at Hidenwood Elementary School ($199,436) and Passage Middle School ($198,000). The grants will be used to provide math and reading support, and wellness and workplace readiness skills.
NNPS has previously received six 21st Century Community Learning Center grants and currently operates programs at Palmer, Sedgefield and Huntington.
In this award cycle, the Virginia Department of Education awarded 38 year-one grants to fund learning centers in communities across the state. The 21st Century Community Learning Centers is a competitive grant program authorized under Title IV, Part B, of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The program provides funding for community learning centers that offer academic enrichment and tutoring to help students meet academic standards in core subjects such as reading and mathematics. For the 2008 competition, priority was awarded to applicants that proposed to serve students in middle or high schools.
