(June 17, 2008) -- On June 17, the Newport News School Board held an Oath of Office Ceremony for the three School Board members elected in May. They were sworn in by Clerk of the Circuit Court Rex Davis and presented a Certificate of Election by the Newport News Electoral Board. They will serve terms starting July 1, 2008 and ending June 30, 2012.
Dr. William “Bill” Collins represents the north district and has served on the Board since 2004. “It’s a great responsibility to be elected a School Board member, and it has been a rewarding experience personally and professionally. I am thrilled to continue to serve,” said Dr. Collins.
Betty Dixon represents the central district and is serving her first term. “The Newport News school system has been my life. I want the same thing as when I was teaching; I want Newport News schools to be the best schools in the state, if not the nation,” said Dixon. “I will tell you now, I will do everything in my power to make this the most wonderful school system it can possibly be.”
Everette “Teddy” Hicks represents the south district and has served on the Board since 2000. “As a member of the School Board it is my desire to continue to make the Newport News school division the best it can be. It takes an entire school board,” said Hicks. “From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank everyone for supporting us.”
The School Board generally meets in regular session at 7 p.m. the third Tuesdays of the month at the Administration Building located at 12465 Warwick Boulevard.
