Newport News Educational Foundation Names Wayne D. Lett Scholar
High School Senior Plans a Career In Education

Danielle LaVergne(May 29, 2008) -- Danielle C. LaVergne, a senior at Warwick High School, is named the 2008 Wayne D. Lett Scholar by the Newport News Educational Foundation.

LaVergne is a student in the Teachers for Tomorrow course, a Virginia Department of Education program for high school students interested in pursuing a career in education. She is a member of the Warwick High Varsity Cheerleading squad and is an active participant in other school and community programs and activities. LaVergne will attend Old Dominion University in the fall of 2008, and major in Education with a focus in literature. After completing her education, she plans to teach English.

The Wayne D. Lett Scholar Program, administered by the Newport News Educational Foundation, is a merit-based award of $6,000 given to a Newport News public school senior who plans to be a teacher and will make a commitment to teaching in Newport News Public Schools upon college graduation.

The award is named in honor of Wayne D. Lett, Ed.D., former superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, who retired in 2003 after 34 years of service in public education.

Virginia's Teachers for Tomorrow Program is offered to high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing a career in education. The program is designed to attract teacher candidates to the field of education through exposure to a world-class curriculum and hands-on experience that focuses on teaching. Students must meet eligibility requirements to be considered for enrollment in the program. More than 70 high schools in Virginia offer the program.

The Wayne D. Lett Scholar Program is a merit-based award of $6,000 given to a Newport News public school senior in the Teachers for Tomorrow program. The program is administered by the Newport News Educational Foundation as a tribute to Wayne D. Lett, Ed.D., a former superintendent of Newport News Public Schools. The student chosen as the Wayne D. Lett Scholar will receive an offer of employment as a teacher in the Newport News school system upon graduation from college. The recipient must commit to teach in Newport News for three consecutive years after graduation. The recipient will also have the option to complete a student teaching assignment in the school division.
