IN THE NEWS 72 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVE COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARDS (May 29, 2008) --  In recognition of their volunteerism and dedication to improving their communities, 72 Newport News elementary students were recently awarded the district’s Community Spirit Award. At a special awards ceremony held at the Omni Newport News Hotel on May 16, 2008, the students were recognized by members of the Newport News School Board, Superintendent Ashby C. Kilgore, and other special guests. The awards program honored students who made positive contributions to their school or communities by demonstrating the qualities in the Newport News Public Schools’ citizenship program: respect, tolerance, responsibility, honesty, self-discipline, compassion, cooperation, and perseverance. Each student was presented with a Community Spirit Award medal. The following students were recognized for outstanding community spirit.
