Congratulations to the 2008 Teachers of the year

(May 20, 2008) -- Newport News Public Schools is proud to announce the divisionwide, elementary, middle and high school 2008 Teachers of the Year. Selected by their colleagues, these teachers represent the best Newport News has to offer students.

Marcia E.B. LittleDivisionwide and Middle School Teacher of the Year

Marsha LittleMarcia E.B. Little, an English teacher at Huntington Middle School, is the 2008 Newport News Public Schools Divisionwide Teacher of the Year and also the Middle School Teacher of the Year. With 32 years of experience, she believes that effective learning is an active and deliberate process. She strives to make learning relevant to students through work in collaborative groups performing case studies. She also makes time to tutor students and mentor other teachers.

"The guiding principles in my teaching encompass the idea that I empower my students with the necessary strategies to take control of their own learning while, in turn, I emulate and model behavior expected of them," Little says. "In short, bonding and connecting builds trust for lasting relationships in and out of the classroom, rigor prepares them to meet the challenges that lie before them, and the relevance of instruction makes it meaningful for life long learners."

Franklin G. MelvinHigh School Teacher of the Year

Franklin MelvinFranklin G. Melvin is a mathematics teacher at Denbigh High School and the 2008 High School Teacher of the Year. With 11 years of teaching experience, Melvin is a firm believer in citizenship and character development education.

"We can no longer deny that teaching is a multifaceted, challenging, and complex entity that stretches beyond the realm of 'just teaching,'" says Melvin.

"As a teacher, I have the power to touch and influence, in a positive and lasting way, the lives of countless students. If I can instill in each student the importance of getting a good education, the possibility exists that influence could last for many generations to come. Students are our leaders of tomorrow."

Melissa D. Roe-JonesElementary School Teacher of the Year

Melissa Roe-JonesMelissa D. Roe-Jones is a second grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School and the 2008 Elementary School Teacher of the Year. She believes all children can learn with motivation and works diligently to integrate technology into classroom lessons. She also believes that classroom instruction must be fluid and flexible – to meet the needs of every student.

"I want to make an impact on not only the students I touch, but also my colleagues, by improving the process by which we teach, the content of the curriculum we follow, and ultimately the product we achieve with students who are globally prepared for a lifetime of learning," Roe-Jones says.

"It is my desire to be accessible to students, parents, teaching colleagues, and others as a knowledgeable and reliable resource."

Roe-Jones has been teaching in Newport News for 10 years, and has 12 years of experience in education.
