January 31, 2008 -- Kindergarten registration is underway in Newport News Public Schools. To help ensure that schools and students are well prepared for the first day of school, Newport News residents are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

If your child will be five years old by September 30, 2008, visit your neighborhood Newport News public elementary school any Monday through Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to begin the registration process. Students turning five in October, November, or December 2008 will not enter kindergarten, but may be eligible for First Step, a pre-kindergarten Title I program. For more information about First Step, please call 881-5461, ext. 183.

To find out which school serves your neighborhood, visit the school division web site (www.nnschools.org) and click “School Zone Finder” on the home page and enter your address at the prompt, or call 591-4500.

Parents and guardians should bring the following information to register for kindergarten:

  • original certified birth certificate
  • immunization records
  • physical exam record (within one year of 9/2/08)
  • child’s social security number (preferred, but not required)
  • proof of legal residence: lease, mortgage or contract on legal residence; current utility bill (electric, gas, water, or sanitation); or a military housing acceptance letter. A driver’s license or personal check is not accepted as address verification.

A minimum of three doses of DPT and polio (0PV or IPV) with one after the child’s 4th birthday are required for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Additionally, two doses of measles, one dose of mumps and one rubella shot (usually listed as 2 MMRs); and three doses of the Hepatitis B are required. A Chicken Pox shot is required for children in kindergarten through 6th grade.
