CHILD NUTRITION SERVICES (CNS)
The Child Nutrition Services Program, an extension of the educational
program of the schools, is operated under the federally funded National
School Lunch and Nutrition Act. The federal laws regulating the
school food services programs are administered under the United
States Department of Agriculture and carried out within the Commonwealth
of Virginia by the State Department of Education.
A written agreement is made by the division superintendent with
the Virginia State Department of Education for each individual federal
lunch program and federal breakfast program. These agreements with
the state agency assure all programs are in compliance with the
regulations and qualify for the federal cash reimbursements and
donated foods. All Newport News Public Schools participate in the
National School Breakfast and Lunch Program.
With a team of 449 dedicated employees, Child Nutrition Services
prepares and serves approximately 21,500 lunches and 6,500 breakfasts
daily and is dedicated to the nutritional well being of all students.
MISSION STATEMENT:
The Mission of the Newport News Public Schools Child Nutrition
Services is to provide students with nutritious and professionally
prepared meals that are served in a pleasant atmosphere.
By providing these balanced meals our students will be ready to
learn.
